This weekend my family embarked on a year long project: 52 weeks of random acts of kindness and gratitude. Over Thanksgiving, we were talking about being thankful and a family member asked my son. They used the word gratitude, and my son was at first tripped up. He didn’t know the word. He had to be reminded. uhh ohh. You see since last year, gratitude has been my thing, my go-to, my life changer. The word is even in my business name. I realized that even though the word gratitude is in my internal life, and in my business life, and in my internet life, my boys were not seeing me outwardly expressing it. At least, they weren’t hearing me outwardly express the word grateful. (We regularly do ‘appreciations’ at dinner, where we go around and mention one thing that we appreciate about each person.)
So we started. My boys drew pictures and wrote “Have a happy start to your New Year” on pieces of paper that were turned into paper airplanes. They then dressed the part, which for a 5 year old means wearing a bag, ala mail carrier style, and for my 8 year old means wearing a mysterious cape and taping the planes onto himself. We then sneakily went from house to house delivering our messages. The boys loved it so much that they went back to the table and made some more.
I have never been one to volunteer for others in need, or openly (or in this case sneakily) share some joy to strangers or neighbors. I tend to be more reserved and more focused on my own and my family’s needs. This is going to be a new and joyful experience for me. We had all decided on doing this before I decided on my word for the year, but I decided what a wonderful way to cultivate more joy in my life. The act of creating the joy and giving it, was entirely joy making — a win win.
So if you receive something labeled from the “Gratitude Guild (aka the Peachy Sneaks)”, put a smile on your face and share the joy because sometimes you have to give joy to receive it.
To be honest though, we are feeling a little stuck about other things we can do. We are open for suggestions.
What have you done in the past to share some love, in a random sneakily kind of way? : )
Have a wonderfully magical day full of joy and gratitude and then come back here and share!
love and light
MEM:
- 7 hours of sleep – pure sleep, snore-y dreamy sleep. I don’t think I’ve experienced that for almost 2 years. My dear hubby took baby girl and they cuddled together elsewhere last night so I can sleep.
-baby girl and my first music class together. She loves music and I love the program so we should have fun.
-Lego class. need I say more?
-yummy chai tea. I don’t drink coffee, so this is my hot, rich tasting creamy replacement and I love it.
-I’m looking forward to a long meeting with our family doc. I’m confident that with the help of some test results, we will have a clearer picture of my family’s health.
- my sweet son and his love and patience. Baby girl wanted to be held while I was writing this. I was frustrated and having a hard time focusing. He offered to take her and play while I’ve worked.
